LED Strip vs Puck vs Linear Under Cabinet Lighting: Which Is Best?
Choosing your kitchen lighting is easier once you understand the three different ways light can sit beneath a cabinet. Do you want one continuous line of illumination, individual round lights, or a slim rectangular fitting that creates a more architectural look?
In this guide we compare LED strip lighting, round puck-style cabinet lights and linear under cabinet fittings. We look at the finished effect, installation, positioning, cost considerations and which design suits different kitchens, so you can make a confident choice before ordering.
Quick answer
LED strip suits a continuous line of light across a cabinet run. Round puck lights suit evenly spaced, individual pools of light and a classic cabinet-light appearance. Linear fittings give you a defined rectangular light rather than an uninterrupted strip. None is automatically best for every kitchen: the right choice depends on the effect, the available fixing space and how you want the worktop illuminated.
LED strip vs puck vs linear lighting: what is the difference?
All three approaches can illuminate a kitchen worktop, but they look and install differently. Here is a practical side-by-side comparison.
01 · Continuous light
LED strip / tape
A flexible or rigid length of LEDs installed along a cabinet run, usually with an appropriate channel or diffuser where specified.
Look: one long line of illumination, especially smooth when the LEDs are properly diffused.
02 · Individual round lights
Puck-style lights
Separate round fittings installed at chosen positions beneath the units. They can be surface mounted or recessed, depending on the model.
Look: a repeated, deliberate pattern of lights along the cabinets.
03 · Defined rectangular light
Linear fittings
Individual elongated fittings, positioned along the underside of the unit rather than supplied as one continuous ribbon of tape.
Look: crisp rectangular details with a broader illuminated face than a typical round light.
Important distinction: a fitting described as linear is not necessarily an LED strip. For example, the Loops Linea Select is a self-contained 200mm rectangular light, not a cut-to-length LED tape system.
1. When should you choose LED strip lights?
LED strip is worth considering when you want light to follow a long, continuous cabinet run, particularly if the goal is a sleek line rather than visible individual fittings. Depending on strip density, diffuser, mounting channel and position, the finished effect may be very even or may show individual LED points.
A properly planned strip installation can look especially effective beneath uninterrupted cabinets, around some shelving details or where you prefer an understated light source. Measure corners, joins and termination points carefully: creating a continuous appearance across separate cabinet sections may require additional planning.
LED strip: what to check
Confirm the strip voltage and power per metre, the appropriate driver, heat management, channel or diffuser requirements, connection method and the manufacturer's cutting and maximum-run limits. Do not mix components just because the connectors appear similar.
Potential trade-offs: longer cable and strip runs need careful voltage-drop and power planning; some strips require profiles and additional connections; and replacing one section may be different from replacing an individual cabinet fitting. A good diffuser also matters if you want to avoid visible light dots or reflected hotspots on glossy surfaces.
Builder note: the Loops 24V Project Builder currently designs compatible projects around its eight individual cabinet-light styles. It is not a cut-to-length LED strip configurator. If flexible tape is your preferred design, check the specific strip system and its matching components separately.
2. When are round puck-style under cabinet lights best?
Round cabinet lights are a popular choice because the fitting positions are easy to plan visually: one light, then the next, with a consistent rhythm beneath the wall units. With suitable spacing and beam spread, their pools of light can overlap to illuminate the worktop effectively.
They are particularly appealing if you prefer a traditional spotlight-inspired appearance, need to light separate cabinet sections, or want to choose between surface mounted and recessed designs.
Round styles at Loops
Aurelia — Surface Round
Classic Ø65mm round appearance, surface mounted with a 16mm fitting depth. A good choice when you do not want to make a large recessed hole.
Eclipse — Recessed Round
A discreet Ø65mm round face with a 58mm cut-out requirement and 14mm recess depth, plus cable clearance. Check the cabinet construction before cutting.
Vela — Slim Surface Round
A particularly shallow Ø75mm round design, just 6.5mm high, for a minimalist look without a large recessed cut-out.
Positioning: for compact round fittings, about 250–300mm between light centres can be a useful starting point, but the final spacing depends on beam angle, output, cabinet depth and the surface you want to illuminate. Our how many lights do I need? guide explains how to plan quantity and spacing.
Potential trade-offs: uneven spacing can make illumination look patchy, and recessed fittings require suitable cabinet thickness, cut-out clearance and careful routing of the cable. Check the installation method of the actual product rather than assuming every round fitting uses the same hole size.
3. When should you choose linear under cabinet lights?
Linear fittings sit between these two visual approaches. They have the clear geometry of an elongated light, but they remain separate complete fittings, not a single uninterrupted LED tape installation. Their rectangular faces can complement modern cabinet fronts, long handles and clean architectural details.
The Loops 24V range includes three distinctly different linear-style choices:
Linea Compact
175 × 50 × 6.8mm
Compact surface mounted rectangle with selectable 2700K / 4000K / 6000K white light.
Linea Select
200 × 40 × 6.8mm
Longer slim rectangle with selectable 2700K / 4000K / 6000K white light.
Linea Pure
200 × 40 × 6.5mm
Fixed white (Warm / Natural / Cool) in Aluminium, with a clean visible face secured over mounting brackets.
These three ranges are 24V DC and non-dimmable. The CCT options on Compact and Select let you change the shade of white; they do not adjust brightness. Choose a compatible on/off wall-switch or sensor arrangement instead of a touch dimmer. By contrast, the compatible round Loops styles offer dimming through the dedicated touch dimmer.
Potential trade-offs: individual linear fittings produce separate illuminated sections rather than one unbroken strip of light. Consider their length and the gaps between units before deciding whether the finished effect suits your kitchen.
Which lighting type gives the most even worktop illumination?
It is tempting to say LED strip is always the most even and puck lights always make distinct spots, but the real result depends on the fitting and placement. A well-diffused strip mounted thoughtfully can form a broad continuous glow. Round lights can give very useful and fairly even task lighting when their beams overlap. Linear fittings can spread the output across a wider face while still appearing as individual fixtures.
Rather than choosing by photographs alone, consider the front-to-back depth of the worktop, how glossy it is, whether the splashback should glow and the direction in which the fitting sends light.
For many individual under cabinet fittings, 30–50mm back from the cabinet front edge is a useful test position, not a fixed installation rule. Temporarily position the lights and see where the light falls before drilling or fitting them permanently. Read our under cabinet light positioning guide for more detail.
Which option is easier to install?
The simplest installation is usually the one that matches your kitchen and the fittings you have actually chosen, rather than a specific light shape.
LED strip: plan the entire run
Consider fixing profiles, suitable adhesion or mechanical mounting, permissible cut points, corners, compatible connections and driver capacity. Make sure any required channels and thermal management are allowed for.
Round fittings: check mounting depth
Surface mounted fittings can avoid large cut-outs, while recessed fittings require accurate holes and enough depth behind the cabinet underside. Plan the cable route and the position of each light.
Linear fittings: follow their fixing method
Linea Compact and Select use colour-matched screws through the body. Linea Pure uses brackets and slides over them to secure the fitting. There is no one-size-fits-all installation method for all linear lights.
Safety note: plan driver access and ventilation, follow the manufacturer's voltage and connection instructions, and have any mains electrical work completed by a suitably competent person. Never assume a 12V component will work with a 24V light, or that a standard wall dimmer is compatible with the Loops 24V driver.
Are LED strips, puck lights or linear lights cheaper?
There is no fair universal winner on price. A short strip may have a modest starting cost, but the final system can also need a driver, diffuser channel, end caps, connectors and installation labour. Individual cabinet lights have a per-fitting cost; the project price also depends on the number of lights, drivers, cable extensions and controls.
For the Loops 24V round and linear ranges, the Project Builder shows the complete matched project price as you add the required components. This makes comparing possible layouts easier than looking at the single-light starting price alone.
Which style suits your kitchen layout?
Long, uninterrupted wall of cabinets
Consider a diffused LED strip for a continuous look, or evenly spaced individual lights if you prefer visible fitting detail.
Separate or short cabinet sections
Round puck-style lights or individual slim linear fittings can be particularly straightforward to position as separate elements.
Minimal, contemporary cabinetry
Slim Linea fittings or shallow Vela round lights provide low-profile options; continuous strip can suit a fully concealed light source.
L-shaped kitchen with separate switches
Plan the groups independently. The Loops 24V Builder can create multiple zones for compatible individual cabinet-light styles.
How to build a bespoke 24V under cabinet lighting setup
If you prefer the round puck-style or individual linear fittings from the Loops 24V range, you can design a system around your kitchen rather than purchasing unrelated parts and hoping they connect.
The Builder currently supports eight defined 24V light styles; it does not create flexible LED tape systems. You can still browse the wider under cabinet lighting collection if you want to explore other formats.

Open the Loops Lighting Project BuilderFrequently asked questions
Is LED strip lighting the same as a linear cabinet light?
No. LED tape normally follows a length or channel and may be cut or joined where the manufacturer permits. A Loops Linea fitting is an individual fixed-length rectangular light with its own body and fitted cable.
Do puck lights give enough light for food preparation?
They can. The result depends on light output, number of fittings, beam angle, position and worktop size. Check the chosen fitting's specification and test the spacing rather than judging by the shape alone.
Can I dim Loops linear lights?
No. Linea Compact, Linea Select and Linea Pure are non-dimmable. Changing the white-light setting on Compact or Select is not the same as dimming. Choose compatible on/off controls in the Builder.
Does every puck light need its own driver?
Not in a compatible Loops 24V zone. Multiple suitable fittings can share one correctly sized driver, and the Project Builder automatically matches the required driver and distribution. Each independently controlled zone has its own driver.
Can I use the Loops Builder for LED tape?
The current Builder covers the eight individual 24V cabinet-light styles shown on the 24V collection page. It is not a flexible, cut-to-length LED strip configurator.
Should I mount my lights at the front or back of the cabinet?
For useful worktop illumination, start by testing a position towards the front of the cabinet. The best position depends on the fitting and worktop depth; our positioning guide explains how to decide.
Our recommendation
Pick the lighting effect first: a continuous glow, individual round points of light or crisp rectangular fittings. Then check mounting clearance, wiring routes, controls and total system cost. For individual round and linear 24V lights, the Loops 24V collection and its Project Builder make it easier to compare styles and plan a compatible setup for your kitchen.
