American Wire Gauge is a method used to measure the diameter of a wire, this guide provides a simple conversion to the Diameter in inches and millimetres, as well as the cross sectional area which is millimetres squared. Basically it is a measurement of how thick the wire is, the higher the AWG, the lower the metric measurement.
This is useful for if you need to know the Cross Sectional Area (CSA) of a cable, to work out how much power a cable can take or if it conforms to the technical requirements of a project your are carrying out.
The European method of measuring a conductors size is in mm² and it is sometimes useful to be able to convert between the two.
