Bespoke Under Cabinet Lighting: Design Your Own Kitchen Lighting System
Every kitchen is different. Cabinet lengths, corners, worktop areas and the look you want can all affect the lighting you need. A ready-made kit may suit a straightforward project, but what if you want to choose every detail?
With the Loops Lighting Project Builder, you can design a bespoke 24V under cabinet lighting system around your kitchen. Choose a light style, finish, white light, quantity and controls; the Builder then matches the compatible driver and required distribution for each lighting zone.
At a glance
You choose the appearance and where the lights go. The Project Builder guides you through the compatible electrical components, multiple lighting zones and full project price — all in one place.
What is bespoke under cabinet lighting?
Bespoke under cabinet lighting means planning a lighting arrangement around your own kitchen rather than choosing a fixed bundle of lights and hoping it fits. You might want four round lights along one worktop, a separate group near the sink, or slim linear fittings beneath a run of modern cabinets.
The important difference is that you can choose the light style, finish, colour, quantity and control for each area — and have the compatible power and connection parts matched to the design.
Our Builder is intended for compatible lights from the Loops 24V under cabinet range. It does not mean that every lighting product or every installation condition is supported; check the fitting specifications and installation requirements before ordering.
How does the Loops Lighting Project Builder work?
You begin with Zone 1, then work through a guided sequence. Here is what to expect.
1. Choose your lighting style
Start with the look you want: round surface mounted, recessed round, ultra-slim round, square, triangle or a linear design. Each style has its own shape and fitting requirements. You can compare all eight premium 24V styles before deciding.
2. Select the finish
Depending on the fitting, available finishes may include Aluminium, Black, White or Brass. The Builder shows compatible combinations for the style you have selected; not every finish is available for every light.
3. Choose the white light
Choose from available Warm, Natural or Cool White options, or Colour Changing White (CCT) on supported fittings. CCT means you can select between specified white colour temperatures; the way you change the setting depends on the light itself.
4. Plan how many lights you need
Measure the worktop or cabinet run you want to illuminate. Where supported, the Builder suggests a sensible starting quantity that you can adjust. For compact puck-style lights, around 250–300mm between centres can be a starting point, but linear fittings and different kitchens need their own layout.
5. Let the Builder match the driver
Every 24V lighting zone needs a compatible power supply. The Builder matches one suitable driver for each zone, based on the lights and their combined load, and includes the required distribution connections. You do not need to work out driver port counts from scratch.
6. Pick how you want to control the lights
Choose from the controls supported by that fitting. Depending on the style, options can include standard on/off switching, a touch dimmer, PIR movement sensing or a cabinet-door sensor. Not every light is dimmable, and these drivers are not designed for dimming with a conventional wall dimmer.
7. Plan cables and accessories
Consider where the driver will sit and whether the supplied light cables can reach it. The Builder helps you consider extension leads and other supported accessories, including mains connection choices, rather than discovering missing parts during installation.
8. Review your zone and complete the project
Review the selected lights, driver, controls, accessories and price. You can name zones, add another completed zone or proceed to the final project review. Check the complete basket and project details before purchasing.
What is a lighting zone?
A zone is a group of lights designed to operate together. This is particularly useful when the kitchen has separate cabinet runs, different styles or areas you want to control independently.
Example: An L-shaped kitchen
Zone 1 could light the main food-preparation worktop with round surface mounted lights. Zone 2 could light a separate cabinet run near the sink using a different finish or fitting style. Each zone has its own matched driver and compatible controls, but both appear together in one project review.
You do not have to split every cabinet into its own zone. Think about which groups you genuinely want to operate together. For independent control, plan them as separate zones.
Why not just buy a ready-made lighting kit?
A ready to buy kit can be ideal when its quantity, fittings and controls already match the job. A bespoke system is more useful when your layout calls for a different number of lights, multiple zones, additional cable length or a different control option.
Both routes are valid. The advantage of the Project Builder is that it brings the decisions and compatible components together before you order.
What should you measure before using the Builder?
Length of each worktop or cabinet run
Measure the area you actually want lit. You do not automatically need one light per cupboard door.
Proposed light positions
For many compact under cabinet fittings, 30–50mm back from the front cabinet edge is a useful starting point for task lighting. Test the result before permanent fixing.
Driver and cable routes
Identify a suitable accessible position for each driver, where mains power will be available, and any likely cable-routing obstacles.

Does the Builder choose the LED driver for me?
Yes. After you choose the light style and quantity for a zone, the Builder matches a compatible 24V driver and required distribution connections. It also guides you through available control and accessory choices.
Understanding the basics still helps when planning with an electrician. Read our guide to choosing an LED driver for under cabinet lights for an explanation of voltage, watts, connection ports and driver placement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I design lighting for more than one kitchen area?
Yes. Finish the first lighting zone, then add another. Multiple zones can cover separate worktop runs or suitable fitted furniture areas within the same project.
Can I choose different light styles in different zones?
Yes. Each zone can have its own compatible light style and choices. This is useful if one part of the room suits surface mounted lights and another calls for a linear fitting.
Are all of the lights dimmable?
No. Some 24V styles are dimmable using the supported touch-dimmer route; others are on/off only. The Builder presents the control options compatible with the selected fitting. Do not use a normal wall dimmer to try to dim a non-compatible driver.
Can I change the number of lights?
Yes. The starting quantity is a planning aid where provided. Adjust the selected number to suit the cabinet dimensions and final layout, within the Builder’s supported limits.
Do I need an electrician?
Plan mains supply and any fixed-wiring work with a suitably qualified electrician. The 24V lighting side still needs correct connections, cable routing and access to the power supply. Always follow the supplied product instructions and applicable electrical requirements.
Can I plan my project before ordering?
Yes. Work through the choices, review your project and check its total before adding it to the basket. You can also use the available project information to discuss your chosen setup with your installer.
Ready to design a lighting system around your kitchen?
You do not need to begin by guessing driver wattage or buying a fixed bundle that may not suit your layout. Start with the light you like, plan where it needs to go and let the Loops Project Builder guide you through the compatible 24V system.
The Builder opens on the Loops 24V collection page. Product availability, supported accessories and final pricing are shown during your project setup.
